New Image Compression Algorithm Based on Adaptive hp-FEM

چکیده
We present a new compression algorithm for two-and three-dimensional volume data (such as images or continuous fields). The technique is based on orthogonal projection of the data to spaces of polynomial functions and it works analogously to adaptive hp-FEM for the solution of partial differential equations. The algorithm has extremely high compression rates and guarantees to achieve any prescribed approximation error. Compressed images are stored as continuous, piecewise-polynomial functions over nonuniform quadrilateral meshes. This makes it possible to apply a wide range of finite element visualization software directly to the compressed images. The new approach has the potential to streamline automated computer processing of images.

On Scientific Data and Image Compression Based on Adaptive Higher-Order FEM
We present a novel compression algorithm for 2D scientific data and images based on exponentially-convergent adaptive higher-order finite element methods (FEM). So far, FEM has been used mainly for the solution of partial differential equations (PDE), but we show that it can be applied to data and image compression easily. The adaptive compression algorithm is trivial compared to adaptive FEM a...
متن کاملMonolithic discretization of linear thermoelasticity problems via adaptive multimesh hp-FEM
In linear thermoelasticity models, the temperature T and the displacement components u1, u2 exhibit large qualitative differences: While T typically is very smooth everywhere in the domain, the displacements u1, u2 have singular gradients (stresses) at re-entrant corners and edges. The mesh must be extremely fine in these areas so that stress intensity factors are resolved sufficiently. Among t...
متن کاملAdaptive Multi-Mesh hp-FEM for Linear Thermoelasticity
We present a new adaptive hp-FEM for linear thermoelasticity where each displacement component and the temperature are approximated on different meshes which are equipped with individual energy-based adaptivity mechanisms. We demonstrate that the multimesh hp-FEM can capture individual behavior of every solution component more efficiently than standard hp-FEM. AMS subject classification: 35B50,...
متن کاملAdaptive hp-Finite Element Method for Low Mach Number Flows
Flow configurations in the low-Mach number regime usually lead locally to large gradients in the velocity field as well as in the temperature variable. Such structures including boundary layers are typical in the study of e.g. heat transfer problems or more generally in situations where compression effects are mainly due to thermodynamical effects (see e.g. [1]). We propose a method based on hp...
متن کاملAdaptive hp-FEM with Arbitrary-Level Hanging Nodes for Maxwell’s Equations
Adaptive higher-order finite element methods (hp-FEM) are well known for their potential of exceptionally fast (exponential) convergence. However, most hp-FEM codes remain in an academic setting due to an extreme algorithmic complexity of hp-adaptivity algorithms. This paper aims at simplifying hpadaptivity for H(curl)-conforming approximations by presenting a novel technique of arbitrary-level...
